Italy - Information on Castelpagano in the Provence of Benevento
Castelpagano, a strong agricultural economy-based village, has its origins in the Middle Ages, even though some findings led scholars to assume the presence of human settlements already in the Roman age. The term “pagus” itself, present in the name of the village, would strengthen this hypothesis. Under the Longobard domination, it belonged to the gastaldato of Boiano-Campobasso. In High Middle Ages it was under the Angevin domination; it was then a feud of the De Balzo, of the Mormile and of the Coppola families. In 1809 it was incorporated in the province of Campobasso and in 1861 it was annexed to the province of Benevento.
